Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival in Pilton, Somerset, dedicated to contemporary performing arts. Glastonbury attracts around 200,000 people, necessitating extensive security, transportation, water, and power infrastructure. After seeing an open-air concert headlined by Led Zeppelin at the 1970 Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music, Michael Eavis decided to host the first festival, then known as Pilton Festival.
Nicolas Roeg and David Puttnam filmed the festival in 1971 and released Glastonbury Fayre as a film. The Pyramid Stage was a tenth-scale replica of Giza’s Great Pyramid, made of scaffolding and metal sheeting and suspended over a blind spring. Michael Eavis reclaimed sole control of the festival in 1981, and it was co-organized with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
In 1994, the Pyramid Stage burned down just over a week before the festival, and a makeshift main stage was built in its place. Due to a security fence breach on the festival’s Friday, attendance increased dramatically in 1995. Glastonbury the Movie, which was filmed at the 1993 and 1994 festivals, was released in 1996.
In 1996, the festival took a year off to allow the land to heal, and it returned in 1997, bigger and better than ever. The year 1998 marked the first time that attendance surpassed 100,000. In 1999, a new Pyramid Stage was added to the mix, along with new features like The Glade and The Left Field.
Due to gatecrashers, an estimated 250,000 people attended the festival this year. The festival was canceled in 2001 due to safety concerns and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom. It was revived in 2002, with the infamous Mean Fiddler in charge of logistics and security.
For the first time in 2002, Coldplay performed on the Pyramid Stage. In contrast to the two months it took to sell 140,000 tickets in 2002, tickets in 2003 sold out within one day of going on sale. The Dance Village’s multiple tents replaced the solitary dance tent of previous years, resulting in a significant increase in the number of dance music attractions in 2004.
The festival’s enclosed area in 2005 was over 900 acres (3.6 km2). Heavy rain and thunderstorms forced the festival to be postponed in 2005. In honor of his love of new bands, the New Tent was renamed the John Peel Tent.
Over 700 acts performed on over 80 stages in 2007, and the capacity was increased by 20,000 to 177,000. Arabella Churchill, a key figure in the planning of the 1971 festival, died on December 20, 2007, at the age of 58. The Glastonbury Festival tickets went on sale on October 5, 2008, one day earlier than usual.
The Festival has always promoted a green agenda, with new initiatives in 2008 including free biodegradable tent pegs for all campers and biotractors that run on used vegetable oil. The festival in 2008 was said to have cost £22 million to put on. Michael Eavis announced that approximately 3,000 tickets remained, making it possible that the festival would not sell out in advance for the first time in 15 years.
The tickets went on sale on October 4, 2009, with the same £50 deposit scheme as last year. Unlike the previous two years, and more in line with previous festivals, the 2010 edition’s tickets sold out in under 24 hours. U2 were scheduled to perform at the Pyramid Stage on Friday night, but were forced to cancel due to frontman Bono’s back injury.
Gorillaz, led by Damon Albarn, took over U2’s Saturday and Sunday headline slots, joining Muse and Stevie Wonder. In 2012, Glastonbury editor Michael Eavis was invited to guest edit the Western Daily Press, a local newspaper. Mendip District Council granted a 10-year license in 2014, which will expire in 2024.
Crime was down 30% from last year, according to police, but festival goers were reminded to keep an eye on their belongings. Hundreds of pairs of wellington boots were donated to the migrant camp in Calais after the 2015 festival.
